• Sitting grandly among some 11 hectares of beautiful grounds, the stunning Château de Sassetot is today one of the most exclusive hotels in the north of France. Formerly a summer residence of the Austrian Empress Sissi, it has lost none of its original splendour or opulence, and you will surely find it as enchanting as she did in 1875. The building itself has a pink stuccoed façade, and all the charm and lightness associated with French architecture of the 18th century. Passing through the grand hall, you enter a world of sumptuous luxury. Rooms are situated in the wings to allow views of the surrounding parkland. They are decorated with parquet floors, painted antique furniture, and rich period colours and fabrics. The atmosphere is one of peace, tranquility and a certain stately grandeur – the perfect place to escape the modern world.

• The rooms are all very comfortably furnished in period style, and have Wi-Fi internet access. The extensive grounds can be explored on foot or on bike - the hotel can provide mountain bikes. There is also an orangery and a tennis court, the latter some 300 m from the hotel. The hotel’s restaurant, Les 3 Roses, offers a sophisticated fusion of classic and modern cuisine using local farm products and seafood. The dining room itself is magnificent, with an open log fire, paintings and antique furniture.

• The Château de Sassetot makes a wonderful base if you’re keen to explore the coast between Dieppe and Le Havre. This stretch includes one of Monet’s favourite haunts, Étretat, where there is also a golf course. Honfleur and Trouville are just beyond Le Havre. Much closer to home is the charming and pebbly Petites Dalles beach, which is just 2 km away. Fécamp itself is worth visiting for the Church of the Trinity and the Bénédictine museum.
