Pousada De Sagres - Infante

An authentic and discreet clifftop retreat overlooking Sagres fort and the lighthouse of Cape St Vincent, the most south-westerly corner of Europe. Pousada de Sagres - Infante has a prime location overlooking the meeting waters of the Mediterranean and the Atlantic. Named after Prince Henry the Navigator who planned expeditions of the west coast of Africa and then, via the Azores and Madeira, to the New World, the pousada is a long, two-story, whitewashed building with a red-tiled roof punctuated with elaborate chimneys. Once inside you realise how well-planned the site is - the pousada faces onto a large grassy terrace (with a swimming pool and tennis court) that stretches out to the very edge of the cliff - with views that surely inspired Prince Henry.

The well-sized bedrooms are not opulent, but they are attractively refurbished in regional-style furniture and are very pleasant. Some of the bedrooms have balconies. Sagres, a thriving fishing village, provides the excellent fish and seafood that can be quietly savoured at Pousada de Sagres - Infante, and offers an interesting contrast to the more usual cosmopolitan bustle of the Algarve coast. There is also a spacious tiled lounge with a large fireplace and attractive furniture. In the dining room you'll find a fireplace, an arched ceiling, and colorful décor.

You'll find Pousada de Sagres - Infante in the centre of Sagres, located just 30 minutes drive west of Faro's Airport. Visitors to Sagres can explore the area on foot, starting with the Wind Compass (Sagres Fortress), Our Lady of Graça Chapel, Vila do Bisbo Cathedral and on to one of the nearly-deserted Atlantic beaches nearby. The town is located in the protected natural park of Southwest Alentejo which provides plenty of opportunities for walking; bird watching, wind-surfing and fishing are popular local pastimes.
