• Undoubtedly Stockholm's most talked-about hotel, Hotel Rival, owned by ABBA's Benny Andersson, offers superb design and top level service in a great location in Södermalm. Definitely leaning on the eccentric side of the city's range of accommodation, the hotel, housed in a newish building, throws up quite a few surprises. Part of the hotel building is a 1930's Art Deco cinema that is now a cultural centre for screenings, concerts and theatre. All 99 rooms have a giant black-and-white Swedish film still over the bed, and the centrepiece in the hotel lobby is a large bed with a fluffy duvet. Off the lobby are various doors and openings leading to the cafe, the cinema, the bakery and a bar, and a grand circular staircase leads up to the hotel restaurant.

• Though small, standard rooms are equipped with a 32-inch plasma screen TV, DVD/CD player, work desk, and a closet with a minibar, safe and an ironing board. Superior rooms are larger with king size beds and bathrobes; deluxe rooms offer free Internet access, and bathrobe and slippers are included. Due to the fact that it was once a cinema, the hotel's public spaces are quite impressive. At the top of the sweeping staircase you will find a round art deco bar and a spacious bistro with modern classic furniture and subtle artistic touches. Breakfast is an excellent smörgåsbord buffet with freshly-squeezed orange juice and a choice of cereals, but you can also ask staff for cooked breakfast.

• Hotel Rival is situated on a beautiful tree lined square and is a two-minute walk from Mariatorget subway station, only three stops away from central station. If you want to get to the old town, you can take the metro for two stops, or walk for 15 minutes.
