Hotel description

A glorious monument to a long-gone age, The Claremont Hotel & Spa perches majestically in the Berkeley Hills, keeping watch over the Golden Gate. Conceived originally in the 19th century as an English-style estate, the location was chosen for its astonishing views of San Francisco and the bay. In 1915 it became a hotel, and since then its immaculate white buildings have been a haven of sophistication, elegance and luxury. Its award-winning cuisine, live entertainment and fabulous accommodation have drawn admirers from across the bay and from across the globe, including presidents and Hollywood stars.

The Claremont's tasteful, individually designed rooms combine historic charm and casual Californian elegance. Many rooms also feature extraordinary views of the San Francisco Bay. The highlight of the resort is The Club at Claremont, the favourite retreat of Berkeley, Oakland and San Francisco society, which offers relaxation, recreation and rejuvenation. Set among 22 beautiful acres, it has three swimming pools, ten tennis courts (six lit for night play), a fitness centre and one of the best spas in the country. If all that makes you hungry, Jordan's Restaurant, overlooking the San Francisco skyline, offers fresh, seasonal cuisine. There is also the lively, casual Paragon Bar & Café, which serves cocktails and light meals, and the poolside Bayview Café, which offers salads, sandwiches, hamburgers and other snack favorites. The Claremont also offers an extensive children’s programme.

Location

Located in one of the Bay Area’s most fashionable addresses, the hotel is just 20 minutes' drive from San Francisco. It also makes an ideal base for exploring San Francisco and California’s wine country. The nearest airports are at Oakland and San Francisco.

"We were a bit nervous about our stay as we read some other reviews recently which indicated that people felt the service was fair at best or the quality of the property had slipped -- but our experience was a complete surprise and a completly satisfying one. The staff was plentiful and accomodating. The hotel was clean, fresh and vibrant. The room (Spa level) was very nice, clean, great sunlight, comfortable beds. The only negative was that the Spa Level has rooms below the dining room and as such there is a ridiculous amount of noice from above starting early AM and going very late. Very distracting and annoying. But we still felt that the good outweighed the bad. And, when we noted this item to the hotel, they were quick to accomodate with a few options that we considered fair and equitable."
