Named after the proto-Impressionist painter Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot, who so loved this area, this hotel seems to come straight from one of his trademark depictions of bucolic ease. Lodged between forest and ponds - the 'etangs' of the name - this hotel makes a wonderful escape, and the intimate, private and slightly exclusive feel is helped by the distribution of the rooms across four different buildings. The buildings themselves are utterly charming, a mixture of delicate balconies, red roofs and elegant windows.

• Each room is completely individual, and for your comfort and peace all have been soundproofed and fitted with air-conditioning; in addition, all are spacious and full of charming details like period style furniture in clean cream and beige tones, sumptuous carpets and materials and original, tasteful artwork. Many also have balconies with views of the magnificent countryside that surrounds the hotel, which in itself make a lovely place to take a stroll in and enjoy time away from the city. There are three fine restaurants, including the Cabassud Restaurant, which has a cosy setting that opens onto a terrace with wonderful views of the ponds, and offers traditional French cuisine with some modern twists, including hints of exotic spices.

• It may not feel like it, but you are just a few kilometres from the centre of Paris, with its airport and excellent rail connections, including the Eurostar, and Versailles, with its unforgettable former royal palace. The local area also includes Sèvres, famous for its porcelein and today home to the national ceramic museum.
