• Located in a fisherman's neighbourhood called Scari near the small harbour of Stomboli and within walking distance of the Vulcanologic museum, Hotel Ossidiana is a unique and convenient place to discover the untamed island. The hotel is a fine example of simple, elegant Aeolian Island architecture and is built from the local lava and pumice stone and painted white. If you find yourself here, you'll immediately fall in love with the views of the volcano summit behind and the crystal clear waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea. The rooms are bright, airy, and tastefully decorated; there's also a private pool and hammam for relaxing in.

• Rooms overlook either the sea or the volcano and have attractive wood furniture, and all standard features such as air conditioning, television and minibars. Stromboli is an island for the adventurous so you'll probably waste no time in walking up to the rim which takes about three hours to climb and two to come down. Boat trips leave from the harbour to go around the island at night, so that you can watch the often spectacular shooting lava which continually rises from the crater. After a tiring day, you'll probably find the hammam, included in the rate, is just what you need. Finally, the clear waters surrounding the island make it a diving and snorkelling haven. Courses at all levels can be arranged and equipment hired locally.

• Hotel Ossidiana is situated on the north west of Stromboli in Scari, where ferries to the island arrive. A ferry can be taken from the island from Milazzo, multiple connections are available daily by ferry or jetfoil is the furthest away from the mainland. During the winter season (from October through late May), ferry services operate from Naples and Milazzo and jetfoils from Milazzo, Messina and Reggio Calabria. During the summer season (from June through early September), the number of services increases: by ferry from Milazzo and from Naples; jetfoil from Milazzo, Messina, Reggio Calabria, Palermo, Capo D’Orlando and Naples.
