The hotel was founded in 1907 by Lorenz Adlon, a successful Berlin wine merchant and restaurateur. One of the most famous hotels in Europe between the two World Wars, the Adlon hosted celebrities including Charlie Chaplin and Marlene Dietrich. It was left in ruins at the end of the Second World War; a new building based on the original was inaugurated in 1997.
