• At the heart of the dramatic High Tatras mountain range sits the Grandhotel Stary Smokovech. A striking and rather romantic yellow building with a distinctive pink roof, it has been open for more than one hundred years and is something of a local landmark. Its hallmarks – quality, luxury and excellent service – have not changed too much, however. Over the years there have been some new additions of course, including the fantastic wellness centre with wave pool and saunas. But overall people come for the same things - the skiing, the stunning scenery and the wonderful fresh mountain air.

Aside from skiing there are many other activities to try in the local area, including cycling, horse riding, climbing, paragliding, tennis, squash and fishing - reception will be happy to offer advice. After a day on the slopes or exploring the mountains the best place to go is the wellness centre, which has a wave pool, three kinds of sauna, whirlpool and tepidarium. There is also a fitness centre and solarium, complete with a bar for light snacks. For something more substantial to eat, try the main restaurant. The Grandhotel Stary Smokovech has a long culinary tradition going back over a century, and offers high-quality dishes and a huge selection of pastries and deserts. They also serve afternoon tea.

• The hotel's location allows for a wide variety of trips, walks and winter sports, the most popular being skiing. The area has excellent rail and bus connections. The hotel is located 20 km from Poprad Airport, 120 km from Kosice Airport and 350 km from Bratislava Airport.
