Dar El Mouhit

Dar El Mouhit is an elegant 18th-century aristocratic house, situated in the historical square of the Medina in Salé. A jewel of Moroccan and Islamic architecture, it conjures up all the romance of North Africa. Almost every surface is covered with decoration of one form or another: stalactite vaults, geometric tilework, horseshoe arches, mosaics, intricate woodcarvings, rich carpets, and finely sculpted arcades together create a sumptuous, splendid atmosphere. This is a space to wander through and wonder at, and the perfect base for your exploration of the area. The rooms are spacious and beautifully decorated, and tease out all the charm of the original building. Rich red velvet fabrics and charming woodwork are set against crisp white walls and terracotta floors.

The rooms all have air-conditioning and all have a separate living area, often divided by curtains. The charming central patio area, part of which forms a living room and bar, is decorated in green tiles and is completed with a marble fountain and glass roof. If you're looking for somewhere to relax, there is also a television room and an elegant reading room – or you could even try the sauna. To catch the cool breezes, go up to the beautiful roof terrace, where, among the plants, you will find stylish tables and chairs. Other terraces even higher up allow views of Rabat and Salé, as well as of the beach and the Bouregreg Valley – what better place to watch the sun go down?

The city of Salé was probably founded by the ancient Phoenicians, but today essentially forms part of the larger Rabat area and is a vibrant melting pot of many different cultures and traditions. The hotel is located just 200 metres from the Grand Mosque and close to other historic monuments. Rabat-Salé Airport is about 15 minutes from the hotel, while the trip to Casablanca takes about an hour by car, and the journey to Tangier or Fes about two hours.
