Château les Bruyères was built by a Viscountess in the early nineteenth century. The famous French writer Marcel Proust used to stay here whenever he visited the spa in nearby Cabourg. Proust's book “A l'ombre des jeunes filles en fleur" (Within a Budding Grove) is said to have been inspired by this magical spot. The Harfaux family has transformed the Château into a charming hotel with a gourmet restaurant. Naturally welcoming hosts, their aim is for every visitor to be able to share in the exquisite beauty of this romantic Château and its stunning grounds. The Harfaux family members are also art-lovers, and invite guests to enjoy their collection of Impressionist and Cubist paintings as well as works of art from the Ming period. Backing on to the Château is an ancient manor-house typical of the Pays d'Auge. An inscription found on a sablière (a large horizontal beam that is part of the half-timbered frame of the building) dates the oldest dwelling on the site: “This house was built by François Fosse in the year 1284".

All facing South, the bedrooms and suites are shared between the Château and the Norman manor-house. Each room has an individual style, inspired by the mistress of the house.
