Set under an azure sky and surrounded by vineyards, the Chåteau de Rochegude must be one of the most magical spots in Provence. A castle first stood on this hill dominating the picturesque town of Rochegude in the 12th century, and later was replaced by the delightful Renaissance building that you see today. Used by the Avignon Papacy, and later restored by renowned architect Viollet-le-Duc, it has the noblest of pedigrees. Grand arcades, splendid staircases, expansive courtyards and the elegant Mansard roof all bring the history to life, while the interiors are very special indeed. Decorated with period furniture, classic Souleïado fabrics, and antique works of art, the atmosphere is one of refinement and breathtaking beauty. A heated outdoor swimming pool and a superb gastronomic restaurant complete this exquisite hotel.
The rooms are the last word in luxury. The restaurant, which is situated next to the last remaining part of the medieval castle, offers a unique gourmet experience using local delicacies such as olives and truffles. The extensive grounds are full of deer and make for a wonderful stroll. Beyond them are the vineyards of the Rhône Valley - indeed, Rochegude is one of the named villages of the Côtes du Rhônes DOC. And if you're feeling athletic, there is also a tennis court.
Location
The town of Rochegude is north of Avignon in the heart of the Drôme area famous for its wine, truffles and olives. The Caves of Ardèche, the town of Orange with its ancient theatre, the Pont du Gard, the Abbey of Sénanque, and the châteaux of Grignan and Suze-la-Rousse are all within reasonable distance.
